Greetings from Montana and on behalf of the dear children and communities we serve in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Thank you (Tashakur and Shukuria) for the overwhelming response to the news in recent days, for the outpouring of support, prayers and the confidence that you, our supporters, have showered upon Central Asia Institute, Pennies For Peace and my family. In the midst of these difficult and challenging days, I keep thinking about the Persian proverb, "When it is darkest you can see the stars." You are all shining lights and we are grateful for your compassion.

Although we would like the world to be linear, orderly and peaceful, the reality is that our world is a dynamic, fluid place, often filled with chaos and confusion. In that space, I thrive and get the courage to help bring change and empower people. I also feel great pride that you have chosen to support those who live in the 'Last Best Places', where other organizations or governments offer few or no services.

I welcome and am used to facing criticism, which sometimes even turns into hostility and threats, over the important work we do in Pakistan and Afghanistan. As an introvert and shy person, it is also not easy to have to enter an arena of a media circus at the drop of a heartbeat. But, as those of you who know me and have supported my work over the years will recognize, the story being framed by "60 Minutes" to air in a few hours today - as far as we can tell -- paints a distorted picture using inaccurate information, innuendo and a microscopic focus on one year's (2009) IRS 990 financial, and a few points in the book "Three Cups of Tea" that occurred almost 18 years ago. Apparently, the CBS program is to be followed in the near future by a similar negative piece by Jon Krakauer in an unknown magazine, which I only recently heard about last week.

The Board of Directors and I made the very difficult decision to not engage with "60 Minutes" on camera, after they attempted an eleventh hour aggressive approach to reach me, including an ambush in front of children at a book signing at a community service leadership convention in Atlanta. It was clear that the program's disrespectful approach would not result in a fair, balanced or objective representation of our work, my books or our vital mission. We also turned down a last minute request for an interview with Jon Krakauer.

The "60 Minutes" program may appear to ask simple questions, but the answers are often complex, not easily encapsulated in 10-second sound bites. Working in isolated areas, in communities that are not on any map, and often in areas of turmoil, religious extremism or natural disasters where education is still relatively rare and ancient codes of conduct and social hierarchies still dominate - all these things demand constant adjustment, accommodation and patience.

We have always maintained that our work is about investing in relationships, respecting elders, and listening over a time span that stretches generations, not in one that lasts just a few minutes on prime time television.

So although I did not do an on-camera interview, CAI's Board of Directors and I have duly responded to questions provided us late last week by "60 Minutes" with both statements and answers. And as always we pride ourselves to be transparent with our financials and IRS 990 forms.

All of this can be found on our website, www.ikat.org, and more information will be added in coming days.

Because of a medical condition mentioned below, I have spoken with our hometown newspaper, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, about this attack, and the newsroom is closely following developments on this story:

Mortenson under fire from '60 Minutes' - Bozeman philanthropist denies allegations (Friday, April 15, 2011)

CAI responds to Mortenson allegations (Sunday, April 17, 2011)

I also recently returned from Afghanistan, and was amazed to see how incredibly well everything is going there, including having five female managers (out of 15 total) and a plan to establish and build over 60 new schools this year. Our Board Chairman, Dr. Abdul Jabbar, also recently returned from an extensive trip to Pakistan. We will combine the news and send you an email and / or printed information within the next month to share the good news.

I would like to take this opportunity to disclose that for the last 18 months, I have been struggling with hypoxia (low oxygen saturation), which made it very difficult to get through a grueling schedule. My physician told me I had to stop and rest, however the urgency of what we do spurred me on. Last Friday (4/15/11), I came home and was diagnosed with a hole in my heart that was shunting blood, causing my low saturations.

Tomorrow, I will have further tests and then a heart surgical procedure this week to fix the hole. After a few weeks my doctor says I will be as good as new. For the first time in eighteen months, I will have tremendous energy, strength and lots of oxygen. At that time, I will come out fighting for what is right and just, and be able to talk to the media. Regardless of what happens, our work must go on. It's most important to know that education is the only thing one can never take away from an individual; it remains forever.

It is a true blessing to be at home now, with family and friends. In the meantime, I send you my heartfelt thanks for your continued support, and if you have any questions or concerns at all, I urge you to contact our office. Our small committed staff will be responding as quickly as they can to answer your calls, e-mails and requests for more information.

Please feel free to pass on this email to your families, friends and colleagues, and if you feel compelled, please write letters to the editor, or your on-line communities, about your thoughts.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Greg Mortenson
Bozeman, MT
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; The bread was donated to local food pantries and helped feed many people. Our students learned that through this simple act, they have made a difference for someone…and collectively, our schools have made a tremendous food donation and made a difference to people in need.

King Arthur Flour Company donated all of the ingredients to bake the bread. The bread was baked in the schools over the course of a few days. King Arthur representatives ran an assembly teaching students in grades 5 – 8 how to make bread. Each student will received the ingredients to bake 2 loaves of bread. Over the course of the next few days, students in grades 1 – 4 paired up with students in grades 5 – 8 to make the bread.

Bread-Making:

· Classes were paired up (older grades with younger grades) and scheduled for a bread making session.

· Bread made early in the week was frozen until the “loaf collection”

Special Event - Tea with the Principals:

· At I-LES classes will be scheduled to go to the kiosk to listen to a story and have tea with Dr. Kelley and Ms. Mulcahy. We would love to hear from you and find out what is happening in your classrooms with Three Cups of Tea. There is so much information out there and so many resources, but it is wonderful to hear from those of you who have been involved in this project, who have received books and have developed lesson plans and curriculum to teach along side the inspiring story. Please feel free to leave comments on my posts or email me if you have something you would like to share on this blog or if you have any questions. I would be happy to get back to you and pass information along or put you in touch with some of the fabulous teachers I have gotten to know through my involvement in this project. I hope to be posting many of your ideas on a more regular basis.
There are so many inspiring quotes from Greg Mortenson that are great jumping off points for lessons or even units of instruction. I would like to leave you with this one:
"I've learned that terror doesn't happen because some group of people somewhere like Pakistan or Afghanistan simply decide to hate us. Many faculty members have read and enjoyed the book as well.

We were very excited to hear that we will be receiving multiple copies of the young reader’s edition of Three Cups of Tea. This version will make Greg Mortenson’s message of promoting peace through education accessible to a wider audience.

Our plans for using the two different versions of the book have expanded for next year. Our sociology teacher read Three Cups of Tea prior to the Greg Mortenson event in Exeter on March 5. As a result, she has decided to require it as part of next year’s sociology class. Her honors and “college prep” students must participate in “Social Action Projects” and the book will be used as an example of one person’s ability to effect positive change in the world. Also, our Global Studies teachers are looking forward to using the young adult version with freshmen students to supplement the unit on world religions. Global Studies is a required freshman humanities class that deals with a variety of global issues. is proud to announce that renowned author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson will be coming to New Hampshire on March 5, 2010 to speak to high school students about his work promoting community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson is author of #1 New York Times best-seller, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time, Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea. Mortenson is also the co-founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute. In 1993 Mortenson’s life was saved by villagers after his failed attempt to climb K2, the second highest mountain in the world. In gratitude to the villagers, Mortenson announced he would return and build the children a school. Since then, and against great odds, he has seen to the construction of 131 schools.

Since 2008, the Oristano Foundation and The Cricenti Trust have made copies of Three Cups of Tea available to high schools and middle schools in New Hampshire. Heather Cummings, Director of Curriculum at the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, Foundation liaison and co-chair of New Hampshire Serving Three Cups of Tea, reports that currently 37 schools have received books and teachers and students are using the story to build an understanding of the culture and hardships of life in these distant and isolated villages. “These students have become fascinated with the Mortenson’s work in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are learning that not everyone in these countries are bad people looking to harm the United States. Students here are learning that Mortenson believes that ‘If you educate a girl, you educate a community’ and education can change culture.”

Educators in these schools have been developing curriculum and learning experiences around the book. Academy:

Incorporated within a World Studies (10th grade) unit on Islam, Three Cups of Tea becomes a centerpiece for a discussion on peace (and the true meaning of an often misunderstood religion and culture: Islam). As an introductory activity, I had my students (three different sections of 90 minute blocks) enter our room, set up in small pods, and take a card which asked them to write down the name of someone in their class who they had worked with/spoke with/knew the least. Once the groups of two were established (I was prepared to tweak the groups as I needed to as many students were tempted to sit with their best friends) students were given various "real world" -- social responsibility-type questions-- to ponder, discuss, and record notes on, but began with prompts that asked the students to simply get to know one another first (to discover similarities, differences, etc.). Eventually, the questions moved toward opinion, i.e.: Do you think the U.S. should be contributing aid to countries in need, and if so, in what capacity, with what "strings" attached, if any? Will the world ever achieve peace, and if so, what is the best avenue toward this goal? For each "level" of question, I served the students a cup of tea, until they had transitioned through the three levels of questions and three cups (actually, about 1/3 cup servings to be practical) of tea. We discussed the symbolism of the tea: hospitality, growing from "stranger" to "friend" to "family." Finally, after discussion which touched on each of the questions students pondered and answered in their groups, students were asked to reflect on the activity.
For more on this, with actual materials, I will be posting a link in the near future.

Curriculum Development

The following ideas developed from the Three Cups of Tea Curriculum Development Team. In its current form, this is simply a list of ideas for lesson planning. It is our hope that in the future, these ideas will continue to evolve as the teachers who are using Three Cups of Tea in their classrooms are developing lessons and contributing project ideas, work samples, objectives, student outcomes, rubrics and/or any other information they would like to share. Please feel free to add comments or links. type='text'>Hope and Redemption in the 21st Century

The following is a curriculum unit created by Kathy Loring of Moultonborough Academy.
Grade and Course Level: Juniors (AP Language and Composition)

Using a variety of texts and media, students will explore the answers to the following essential questions:

What responsibility does an individual have to society?

What influence does culture have on our relationships with each other?

How do I resolve my responsibility to the world?

How do I determine when social action is appropriate?

The main objective of this is for students to gain an understanding that the differences between humans are really quite insignificant. Compassion and cooperation are more important than our differences. Ultimately, students will write a synthesis essay utilizing information from the various texts/films to support their response to the essential questions.

Resources:

The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert school materials to one of Mortenson's Pakistani schools. Upon meeting the Pakistani teachers who will be visiting Plymouth State University through the PELI Institute this summer, we will identify which school to "adopt". Our goal is to build a bridge between two cultures by fostering an ongoing exchange between the students. For more information, contact Jerilyn Dolan at jerilyndolan@gmail.com and Barbara Cunningham at bcunningham912@gmail.com.

Many thanks!

Many thanks to Kathy and Dave McCabe of the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, Jamie Meyers of Kingswood Reg.
